Fall is in the air and everyone around you is becoming re-energized. It’s the perfect time to jumpstart your career prospects by updating your resume. Since September is International Update Your Resume month, I will be providing you with information throughout the month on how you can get your resume re-energized.

You may be asking yourself, why update my resume? While you may think that your qualifications haven’t changed, you need to consider what additional skills you have added in the past year. Look at what conferences, classes or continuing education you have attended. You may have also received awards or managed large projects successfully. All of these items add up to needed adjustments on your resume.

Think about it…your car receives regular maintenance. You go to the dentist and doctor on a regular basis. The reason? Things change and it’s best to keep up on the changes. Your resume is just as important, even if you are not in the market for a new job. It’s always better to be prepared.

An updated resume will make your life less hectic should an unexpected job opportunity or chance for promotion occurs. Recruiters want to know you’re your current accomplishments have been.

An annual update is also a great way to prepare yourself for the yearly appraisal process with your current company. You will have your accomplishments over the recent past fresh in your mind and available at your fingertips.

The value of an updated resume is endless. Remember to consider your:

  • Successes
  • New skills
  • Expanded or new roles
  • Involvement in projects
  • Additional education, conferences, or workshops

Get a fresh start to fall by getting your resume ready for any new adventures that are available. September is a time for new beginnings and a chance to get re-energized after a summer of relaxing.
